What is Stevenson Reading?
Stevenson Reading is one of the commercial products produced by Stevenson Learning Skills. It is a program that weaves together a variety of unusual and innovative instructional techniques to improve students' decoding, encoding and comprehension levels. The program uses visual clues to help teach word attack skills, from learning letters to recognizing vowel patterns to unlocking multi-syllable words.
Stevenson Reading combines research-based methods like multi-sensory phonics and phonemic awareness with some imaginative strategies to create a carefully selected sequence of building blocks with a built in mastery approach. Each block is a skill that creates a solid foundation for learning subsequent material. So, as students’ reading and spelling vocabulary grows, there are not holes that often occur when skills are taught in isolation.
Stevenson incorporates specific phonemic awareness exercises beginning in the earliest lessons, and introduces imaging as the first of several vocabulary building steps. Direct instruction along with meaning-based exercises such as illustrating, demonstrating, and categorizing are also applied consistently. The program also of course uses mnemonics to enhance all of these strategies.
By using several methodologies, Stevenson Reading is able to accommodate a variety of common learning problems so that students not only learn to read with comprehension, they learn to answer questions about passages in complete sentences in writing. Overall, this program builds a variety of student skill levels in fun, challenging and creative ways.
